Talking face-to-face to your financial adviser can help you get to know each other. Meetings usually happen at their office, but some advisers can visit you at home – it’ll depend on the service they offer.

This option may suit you if:

  • you’re looking for scoped or comprehensive advice.

Talking to your financial adviser over the phone works for a lot of people. Phone-based advisers are usually skilled in building rapport quickly and clients enjoy the convenience it offers. They provide a service that can lower cost, particularly if you have only one or two issues in which you would like advice. It’s a good choice if you don’t have time to visit an office, live in a remote area of if travelling isn’t easy eg if you have a disability.

This option may suit you if:

  • you enjoy talking to people over the phone
  • you have one or two areas you want advice on
  • it’s difficult to travel to and from meetings, or
  • you want flexibility and appointment times that suit you.

When you seek advice from us, we’ll take the time find out about your current situation and attitude to risk so we can answer these key questions:

    We’ll help you work out if you’ve enough money saved in case of emergencies before you start to invest.
  2. How much should you invest?
    We’ll take a closer look at your finances to help you work out how much you can comfortably invest.
  3. Where should you invest?
    We’ll recommend the right investment for your risk profile.

Please remember, the value of investments and any income they generate can go down as well as up, meaning you may not get back what you invest. You can access your money if you need to, however you should aim to invest for at least 5 years.

Choosing your own investments

Of course, not everyone wants to receive financial advice.

If you’re happy making your own investment decisions, you can buy funds via our online fund platform, Global Investment Centre, or shares via our online sharedealing service, InvestDirect. Both services let you research, build and monitor your own portfolio of investments. And both services are available via your online banking – so there’s no new passwords to remember.
