3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Use Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are a huge problem. According to the Just Say No campaign, a Sustainability Victoria initiative against plastic bag usage in Australia, approximately 80 million plastic bags litter the environment every year. Clearly people shouldn’t use plastic bags.

On average, plastic bags take 1,000 years to break down, meaning this is a problem that won’t go away anytime soon. Therefore, people the world over are being encouraged to adopt new methods of carrying products, such as reusable bags, to cut down on plastic consumption. While many people understand that you shouldn’t use plastic bags as they are bad for the environment, what exactly makes them so harmful?

They create litter

The Northern Territory Environmental Protection Authority states that litter collection – of which plastic bags are a major contributor – costs Australian governments $200 million each year. This is a colossal amount of money, and if plastic bag usage was decreased, it’s also likely that the amount spent on cleaning up litter would go down too.

This would free the environment of toxic materials and other related issues caused by excessive plastic use, as well as making our planet are prettier place to live.

They harm animals

As plastic bags are lightweight and float easily, this means they can travel long distances when picked up by the wind. Often, the bags will fall along the coast and other areas of animal habitats, which creatures then attempt to eat, only to choke and eventually starve to death. After the animal carcass has rotted away, the bag is normally released – only for the whole process to be repeated again.

Removing plastic bags from our society will not only rid us of waste and unnecessary expense, it will also help to protect our wildlife and landscape for which Australia is renowned for. According to Animals Australia, a national animal welfare charity, 100,000 animals are killed by plastic bags every year.

They are expensive

The idea that plastic bags are a freebie when doing your weekly shop or other activities is a fallacy. The production price is often incorporated into taxes and other fees, meaning that the price of your groceries, clothes and other items increase to factor in these associated costs. This suggests that although eco-friendly bags may seem initially more expensive, in the long run they work out cheaper – so the more you use them the less you pay. A motivating reason why you shouldn’t use plastic bags.

Tasmanian residents are in effect paying less for their goods compared to some of the rest of the country, due to the state-wide ban on plastic bags in retail. Tasmanian Plastic Shopping Bags Ban Act 2020 intends to legally reduce plastic bag usage and increase awareness of other green alternative options.

You’re not helping your sale by hanging around.

It’s the dreaded question real estate agents fear when speaking to the seller. “May I be present at the open house or showing?”

At this point, most agents will pause, take a deep breath and think of all the reasons why this is the worst idea possible. Having the seller present during an open house or showing of their property is almost always a bad idea. Here are three reasons why.

1. The seller’s presence will make buyers feel awkward.

Home buyers need to feel as comfortable as possible when looking at a potential new home. It’s a big investment, and they should feel welcome to open closets, look in cabinets, look behind the couch, or put their ears up the walls or windows. A serious buyer of a property needs to do whatever they can to learn about the home.

In the presence of a seller, the buyer may feel like a guest in a stranger’s home, a patron at a museum, or something in between. They spend too much time being cautious and not enough time really delving into the property. When buyers don’t feel completely comfortable to explore, they may miss the intricacies of a property. Or they might not give the home a fair chance. This means a missed opportunity for both the buyer and the seller.

2. Sellers tend to talk too much.

Honesty is always the best policy, of course. But don’t forget that this is a “sales” process, and that less is usually more. Let’s say a potential buyer asks the seller about the neighbors. “Oh, we love our neighbors!,” the seller answers. “They drop by our house all the time and we do the same. They’ve got high school-age kids, too, who are a lot of fun. It’s one big, constant block party!” While some might like this idea, others who value their privacy will be turned off.

3. Sellers can get hurt feelings, which can cost them money.

A seller may experience hurt feelings from questions or comments that buyers ask. This could lead to a negotiation that starts off on a bad note.

For example, a buyer touring a home with dark colored walls, floors and heavy window coverings asked his agent what it would cost to refinish the floors and paint the place. The seller, who preferred the dark, was insulted by the questions and immediately went on the defensive. When the low offer came in from that buyer, the seller couldn’t help but think that they were trying to discount the price to pay for those cosmetic changes. The seller refused to budge on price.

In this instance, emotions got the best of the seller. Ultimately, the seller lost a buyer and a good offer. The final sales price came in less than that offer by $7,500.

Exceptions to the rule

Every once in a while it helps for the seller to be present during an open house or showing.

After weeks on the market without any offers, especially with a property that needs serious cosmetic or staging work, it might be helpful for the seller to attend the open house anonymously. They can hear directly from buyers that the paint job is off-putting, how the place feels too much like a bachelor pad, and so on. The real estate agent may have been trying to tell the seller these things all along, but sometimes, independent confirmation is needed before the seller will take action.

As an example, a seller’s home was at the top of a hill. There was a steep walk from the driveway to the front door, which proved to be a major objection among potential buyers. The seller, a triathlete, just couldn’t grasp why buyers would object, and he wouldn’t budge on the price. By being present (briefly) at one open house, the seller witnessed buyers arriving breathlessly, saying snide comments like, “If I bought this home, I could cancel my gym membership.” He got the message and agreed to drop the home’s price significantly.

iOS can be unintuitive

Apple may have nailed down the formula for creating aesthetically pleasing products, but the software running inside said devices still leaves a lot to be desired.

A lack of customisation, no custom ROMs or widgets and no true integration with Google services being just some of its cons. And since it’s a proprietary piece of software, every single Apple phone or tablet has the same OS (which can be a benefit, of course). With Android, there are so many options on the market.

A lack of choice

One of the biggest strengths of Apple’s market positioning is keeping a limited palette of products. It’s profitable, it’s targeted and it’s savvy. You know what else it is? A lack of choice.

Sure, there’s nothing stopping you in picking up an older version of the iPhone or the iPad, but while you’re deciding whether to buy a vanilla iPhone 6, a dearer iPhone 6 Plus or a iPhone SE you’ll likely look over to the Android side of the room and see all those different devices in all shapes and forms. Increasing the size of a screen or stripping out features does not a vast selection make, Apple.

The ‘if it ain’t broke why fix it?’ mentality

When Android first launched, it was a laughable, bug-ridden mess that seemed a poor alternative to the far smoother realm of iOS. But over the years, Google has helped massage the platform into a genuinely intuitive and malleable operating system (although it depends on the device!) that can be tailored to suit any device, processor and package.

That’s not to say iOS has never changed, small tweaks here and there (like split screen apps) have kept it functional, but it is in need of a proper overhaul.

Macs take forever to get the best games

If you happen to be a Mac user, you’ll know it’s the machine of choice when it comes to design-based tasks, but should you want to play the latest titles to hit the gaming stratusphere you’ll soon find yourself nurturing a case of the disappointments.

The presence of Steam has certainly improved this issue by opening the door for more titles tweaked for Mac use, but when it comes to the bigger titles the wait can often be indefinite. PC ports already take a month or more to arrive after consoles release dates, while Mac users can be waiting years for a version to pass their way.

You have to have an iPhone to have an Apple Watch

While it’s not immediately obvious (since so many smartwatches work independently), but the only way you can use an Apple Watch is to have your very own iPhone to pair it with.

For those who’ve already pledged their immortal souls to the Cupertino gods this is no big thing, but to those of us with Android or (dare we say it) Windows Phone devices, the temptation to add some Apple chic to our wrists means converting on more than one front. It’s one more example of Apple’s products feeling less and less inclusive to non-iOS users, though with all apps now expected to run natively, maybe change is coming on this one.

iTunes is a hot mess

When iTunes first wandered onto the scene, accompanied by the hipster-attracting iPod, it seemed like perfect accompaniment. Yet, even with every Tom, Dick and Harry adding their podcasts to Apple’s growing spoken word catalogue and many an LP exclusive, there was still something holding it back: it didn’t really work.

iTunes is a chore to use, never feels smooth and presents your music in the most unintuitive way possible. And in a day and age where streaming services make music downloads feel oddly archaic, iTunes is fast becoming a relic in its own right.

You’ll potentially have to go into an Apple Store

Now we’re not digging at the people who work in Apple’s retail outlets, but rather the style of customer service the firm expects its employees to exude from every pore like some sub-tropical affliction.

That sickly sweet chumminess, the fact they call their staff Geniuses (maybe they are, but still), the fact there’s a bloody area called the Genius Bar, so many things about that floor space scream awkward and try hard.

You’ll have to sell a kidney to buy one

Perhaps the oldest gripe of all when it comes to Apple products, but an important one nonetheless if you’re on my wages. Apple don’t make bad products, and no one can seriously question the quality of their output, but even for something as dated as the iPod Touch you’re still looking at forking out some serious dollar.

Even older models of current devices, such as the original iPad Air or the iPhone 5S will force you to sell an organ or one of your children just to afford the monthly payments. Apple’s products are premium, but they’re not that premium.
